Photogravure is a process that dates back to the 1870s, and was thought to be the most beautiful form of photographic reproduction, though by the mid 20th century it had fallen out of use due to cost and complexity.  Now, with the advent of digital technologies and modern polymer coatings, the process has been revived, often called photopolymer or solar plates.    Metal plates with a light sensitive polymer layer are exposed through a printed positive of the image, creating a ‘negative’ on the plate surface.   This is then manually inked, wiped and put through a press along with damp paper.  Due to variances in inking, wiping, pressure etc, each print is subtly unique.
